Living a Meaningful Life

Randy Pausch was always dreaming as a child. He achieved many of his childhood dreams because he was tenacious. When he applied for his dream job at Disney and was told no, he didn't give up. Instead he saw it as an opportunity to gain more experience and prove to Disney and others how hard he was willing to work for what he wanted. It is easy to get discouraged when told no, but discouragement doesn't lead to growth. Randy chose to look at the answer no in an optimistic way. He said, "experience is what you get when you don't get what you want."

His parents played a role in helping him achieve his goals by encouraging his creativity. They could have painted over the math equations he wrote on his bedroom walls, but they let him express himself in a way that allowed him to dream big. He encouraged parents to value their children's creativity by allowing them to draw on their walls. As a parent myself, I love the idea of giving my kids creative space to dream.

Randy Pausch's life is an incredible example of the power of dreaming. He felt no regrets at the end of his life, because he stayed true to his dreams. Too often we lose control of our lives because we let go of our dreams because of fear and rejection. We hear "no" and instead of tenaciously moving forward, we give up.

One of my childhood dreams was to live a creative life. I always loved expressing myself through art and writing. For years I labeled myself inartistic and didn't even try. I thought if I tried something once and didn't do well, that meant I could never succeed. I believed I would not achieve my dream. One day I was invited to take painting lessons. I almost said no, thinking I would just embarrass myself. However, I still had enough of my childhood dream in me to say yes. At first I made a lot of mistakes. I chose to look at the mistakes as opportunities for growth. Over time I became better and began feeling proud of my paintings. I still have a lot of room for improvement, but I see that as a good thing now. I am still working on this childhood dream and I'm confident I will achieve it.
